Last week, I wrote about starting a book club, and I mentioned that I've been in a book club since 2004 (the Killer Bookworms). We read a book a month which adds up to an awful lot of books. I'm sharing with you the books we've read which also happen to be in Plymouth Library. I decided to pick just five unforgettable books to tell you about. Local author, Ben Sherman, wrote about his experiences as a Conscientious Objector and medic during the war in Viet Nam. Another war book, The Book Thief, takes place in World War II Germany and is narrated by Death. Both books reflect the futility of war. Cold Comfort Farm is something else entirely – an amusing diversion – and Mennonite in a Little Black Dress had me laughing out loud. Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher covers a lot of territory including the life of Edward S Curtis and the fate of the American Indians.

Ideally, book club choices are well-written, thought provoking, and they spark lively discussion. What books do you think would make good book club choices? If you have any recommendations, please comment on this blog posting!

By the way, movie groups are always looking for thought provoking movies that spark lively discussion, too. We have a number of those in Plymouth Library's collection so if you've seen one (or more) that you would like to recommend, I'd like to hear from you.
