Advent Begins Sunday!

November 28, 2017

A new liturgical season begins in the Church this Sunday with the start with Advent. Along with Christians all over the world, we begin our season of waiting for the Christ child to arrive.

We wait, but not idly. As we wait in the darkness of our world and our lives, we are invited to consider the gifts that come in the darkness. I love this quote from author Wendell Berry: “To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight, and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings.” Advent offers the opportunity to explore the blessings that can only be found in the dark, as we wait with anticipation.

I find the quiet contemplation of Advent as a powerful antidote to the outside world as it begins to burst with the hyperactivity and stress of consumer Christmas. Advent is a wonderful time of year to focus on a spiritual practice. I invite you all to join me this year in a daily devotional practice for Advent. This Sunday, a table in the Lounge provides various daily devotional options for you, including a devotional booklet for families. Please come and choose the resource that works best for you. Let us prepare our hearts together in the darkness of the season, knowing that the Christ child is on his way. –Jennifer Castle
