European Dissent sponsors an action 12:30 pm, Monday, March 21, 415 1st Ave N #400, Seattle,
to express opposition to King County’s new youth jail. This faith-based action with a Christian focus, welcomes all to attend in support of this action. Gather across the street, slightly south of HSW offices, in the plaza in front of Key Arena.
EPIC: Ending the Prison Industrial Complex, YUIR: Youth Undoing Institutional Racism, and others organized strong, community-based opposition to King County’s $210 million plan for a new youth jail since the project’s introduction in 2012. Expansion of the Prison Industrial Complex enables corporations and individuals to earn a profit by jailing youth of color. The County has amended their plans as a result of this grassroots pressure, and the Seattle City Council passed a resolution stating their goal of “Zero Use of Detention for Youth.” These changes demonstrate the paradigm shift occurring within our County. We still stand with EPIC, YUIR, and others in saying No New Youth Jail!
Howard S. Wright secured a $154 million taxpayer-funded contract to build the new facility. We also turn the tables on our own institution: predominantly white church. We recognize that good charitable work we do as Christians happens concurrently with our complicity in a system designed to economically benefit white people. Our liberation is bound together and we must add our voices to those most affected and calling for justice. Help us plan the details 10 am, Saturday, March 19 (contact below for address). Please R.S.V.P. for the Action: email Famous.Claire@gmail.com or call 206.909.8758. –European Dissent
