Fasting and Prayer for Standing Rock in Seattle

November 29, 2016

Brother Senji Kanaeda (of Bainbridge Island Nipponzan Miyohoji Buddhist Temple) will fast and pray for the water and earth protectors of Standing Rock 9 am to 4 pm, Thursday, Dec. 1, Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3, at Victor Steinbruck Park, 2001 Western Ave Seattle.

All are welcome to join Senji during this time of fasting and prayer. Fasting is not required; simply come and sit with him in peace and solidarity with Standing Rock. Updates available at psnukefree.org.

The Rohachi (prayers and fasting) Zen practice happens from December 1 through 8. In fasting, one can concentrate the mind on the present moment, and intentions can have greater clarity.

The Nipponzan Myohoji order Rohachi practice of fasting and prayers has focused on abolishing nuclear weapons and nuclear plants and ending disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima. Founder monk Nichidatsu Fujii requested in the early 1960s that monks and nuns support Indigenous American and Afro-American peoples. –Adele Reynolds, Plymouth Peace Action Group
