Powerful and difficult conundrums exist when it comes to raising white children in a society that is one of the most racially diverse in the world, while also being full of racial tension and inequity. Should we teach white kids to be “colorblind”? Or, should we teach them to notice race? And if so, how? What roles do we want them to play in addressing racism when they encounter it? How do we best do that? When we talk about race well, we must talk about the reality of white privilege and racial injustice. How do we teach about race honestly, then, without making our children feel bad about being white?
Dr. Jennifer Harvey, writer, speaker and professor at Drake University, focuses her work on racial justice and white anti-racism. Dr. Harvey’s books include Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in Racially Unjust America (Abingdon Press, January 2018) and Dear White Christians: For Those Still Longing for Racial Reconciliation (Wm. B. Eerdmans). Dr. Harvey has also contributed to the New York Times and Huffington Post. She is ordained in the American Baptist Churches (U.S.A.).
