You Can't Always Get What You Want...

You can't always get what you want

You can't always get what you want

But if you try sometime you might find

You get what you need.

This 70s Rolling Stones chorus kept playing in my head during an otherwise quiet moment as I considered why I go to church. I realized that while a lot of my attendance is habit, most of the time my thoughts during the ride home run along the lines of, “I really needed to hear that today.”

“That” is usually something I wasn't expecting, perhaps a sermon, Bible reading, poem, song or a comment by a fellow parishioner.

I never consciously considered giving up sleep for Lent, but essentially that’s what I signed up for when I started reading Just Mercy for the Lenten discussion group. Too often the very real people in this book occupied my thoughts as I tried in vain to drift off. Looking back, I see that this time for consternation was necessary, but at that moment, it certainly was not what I wanted!

My hope is that we all find or hear what we need, both at Plymouth and in the other parts of our lives. – Jon Daniel
