Back in 2005, the General Synod of the United Church of Christ voted to support marriage equality. You may remember the consternation and dismay amongst some UCC churches and some UCC members. At that time, only one state (Massachusetts) had legalized same-sex marriage. In the following years, more and more states joined in legalizing same-sex marriage and in June, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution allows for same-sex couples to marry, effectively overturning remaining restrictions in place in the remaining states. This is just one example of the progress that has been made, but we are at a point where hard-won victories are at risk.
