I’m chuckling that I’m on a hymn theme with matters of security at Plymouth Church UCC! The familiar lines continue to inspire hope and assurance. Friday and Sunday we experienced wonderful events as again we stood with our Muslim siblings in faith to show our support. Their generosity toward us in grateful response has touched so many. This is good church! On Sunday morning we experienced another day of diverse faith community hospitality and justice, standing with our Muslim sister, Aneela Afzali, and noting Transgender Visibility Day as part of our welcome in worship! Who God is for us as we stand in the strength and power of God is indeed mighty!
This past week, we entered into a trial agreement with Stephen Group International, the security company for the Redmond mosque, which has specialization in working with communities of faith in their approach to providing security in places of radical welcome, inclusion and hospitality. Thank you to those who shared your thoughts about our additional security measures and the presence of the security officer. Our security team met this past Tuesday and are inquiring how we can be both gracious hospitality and controlled access to the building for all our activities, events and partners.
Thank you for continuing to look to each other as we extend and offer welcome, for embracing new ways of being open to the community and being safe as community, and for helping us be aware and watchful, yet overcoming fear in the never failing presence of God.
Yours in grace and hope,
Rev. Steven Davis, Executive Minister
