“Be Transformed: Listen, Love, Live!” This theme guided our week as 81 persons gathered for family camp at our UCC Retreat Center at N-Sid-Sen on Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. While we spent time in groups, worship, rest and play, the most significant time for me came during mornings and afternoons of one-on-one conversations. As the minister for camp, I invited all for a personal visit, and that's exactly what happened. Almost every morning, afternoon and evening was filled with people asking for a few minutes to chat, which often turned into great, long conversations.
The week's theme became reality for me, and a reminder of exactly why I still feel so called to ministry. While my activities in ministry at Plymouth Church UCC most frequently involve operational ministry and behind the scenes organizing and administration for what we do together, this week on the lake gave me the opportunity to pastor in a more personal way. We shared stories and listened to details that gave us insight into we most long for. That listening gave us opportunities to love with greater understanding and compassion, and to encounter each other as more than simply church members, as people in connection - people with needs - people who long for more.
As we listen and love, the challenge to live into our greatest hopes becomes real. Living our faith takes effort. How we go about our day-to-day activity of listening and loving can change our lives. We experience far more of the life we most desire when we connect with people in ways that help us genuinely experience them and ourselves as people with common faith and human experience which draws us together.
Yes, I came back home to lots of emails, work to do and needs to deal with. I also returned with a greater commitment to listen, love and live... and because of that, my transformation will continue far beyond just a week! Thank you, Plymouth Church UCC, for the blessing of being one of your ministers, and for the great walk of faith we share. I'm excited for the transformation we continue to experience together. Yours in grace and hope, Rev. Steve Davis, Executive MinisterSubscribe
