When people ask, “Why are there no great women composers?” it is important to be aware of the assumption inherent within the question itself – that there are not and have not been any “great women composers.” Hear Dr. Wanda Griffiths in concert at 12 pm, Friday, March 1 play composers including Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Wieck Schumann, Ethyl Smyth, Jeanne Demessieux and Florence Price.
As with all marginalized groups in society, the contributions and accomplishments of women in music have been consistently overlooked, dismissed and even erased. In honor of Women’s History month, come hear the music and stories of women who succeeded as composers despite the many challenges and barriers placed in their way. Suggested donation of $10 benefits Plymouth Friends of Music Fund. Discounted parking in Plymouth’s garage upon availability.
