Remember back in 1870, when Seattle’s population was a shade over 1,100 people, plastic had just been invented and the transcontinental railroad was just starting service? I didn’t think so. Safe to say you also don’t recall when a little church opened in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood that year, a place called Plymouth Congregational Church. January 2020, ‘that little church’ celebrates its 150th anniversary!
Get ready, because starting this fall, Plymouth begins a series of exciting, commemorative events to mark this milestone. Reminiscing, celebrating, soul-searching, reconnecting and dreaming culminates in a big event slated for January 2020. Your Council appointed a dynamite planning committee, people who are brimming with energy and ideas. They are sketching out community engagement, guest speakers, historical reflections, fundraising and sponsorship opportunities to make this a time to celebrate and remember. Chances abound for you to get involved in ways large and small. Stay tuned and keep your good ideas and energy handy.
Most importantly, we want to seize this opportunity to think about how we will continue to grow people of faith and do God’s work in the world for the next 150 years. We also want to celebrate and honor the many amazing accomplishments Plymouth rightly touts, and simultaneously honestly reflect on the privilege and footprint of oppression that is also part of our legacy.
I feel blessed that we can celebrate and reflect together as a congregation on this significant milestone in our church’s long history in upcoming months. Thanks be to God, and long live Plymouth!
