Engaging Faith Leaders to turn the Hearts of Parents to their Children

July 16, 2019

Looking back at the first half of 2019, I’m filled with gratitude both for the privilege of heading up Lambert House’s Faith Leader Engagement Program as well as for Plymouth’s ongoing support.

Through LGBTQ+ cultural competency training and leadership consultation, the Faith Leader Engagement Program supports faith leaders, 1) in guiding parents/families to more life-giving responses when a young person comes out and, 2) in providing helpful spiritual care to LGBTQ+ people.

The program’s first six months focused on promotion and making connections, including…

  • Designing and mailing a promotional brochure to 400+ faith leaders in the greater Seattle area
  • Creating an introductory web page and electronic needs-assessment survey
  • Tabling at the NEXTChurch Conference in March
  • Developing an original LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Curriculum geared for faith leaders
  • Consulting individually with 20+ faith leaders regarding their ministry to LGBTQ+ people
  • Leading 3 trainings, involving 50+ people and representing 12 faith communities

These initial connections generated 100+ conversations with faith leaders about this program. Looking toward the Fall, 7 more trainings are in the works. Between the consultations and trainings that have been scheduled, the Faith Leader Engagement Program has the potential to reach the 1,000+ congregants who make up the faith communities that are participating so far.

Some of these communities are more theologically conservative—actively discerning their posture and policies toward LGBTQ+ people. Others have been open and affirming for years but are looking to expand their conversation regarding gender identity, intersectionality, and emerging issues for LGBTQ+ youth and communities.

Personally I’ve been encouraged by the sincerity and openness with which each leader I’ve met with has approached these important conversations that impact LGBTQ+ people and our families. Lambert House is grateful to be partnering with Plymouth on this important work.

Peace,
