Lights for Liberty: Friday, July 12

July 9, 2019

Angry about the inhumane treatment of children and families at our border and the constant new hurdles facing immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in the US? Turn that darkness into light by joining a Lights for Liberty gathering near you on Friday night, July 12The United Church of Christ is one of the many groups sponsoring this event.

“We are a coalition of people, many of whom are mothers, dedicated to human rights, and the fundamental principle behind democracy that all human beings have a right to life, liberty and dignity. We are partnering with international, national, regional and local communities and organizations who believe that these fundamental rights are not negotiable and are willing to protect them.” (from

Bring a light – flashlight, cell phone, battery operated lights of all kinds. (Some locations may also allow open flames on candles.) Start times and speakers vary by location, generally 7-9 pm. At 9 pm local time, at every detention camp, and in cities, towns, and homes around America, a silent sea of “candles” will light up the nation. There are currently 23 locations listed in Western Washington. More locations are being added daily, so check the website for one near you by clicking here.

Plymouth members have committed to being at these two locations, but there are others to the north, south and east so we encourage you to join whatever group works best for you:

1.  Queen Anne: Counterbalance Park. Look for Adele Reynolds and Sam Williams. Start time listed as 7 pm

2.  West Seattle: Alki Beach Statue of Liberty. Look for Carol Mooney and Beverly Buehler. Start time listed as 8 pm.

You can also join with the Kavana Cooperative this Friday, July 12 at 8:30 for a shabbat version of  Lights for Liberty.  Shabbat for Liberty, open to all friends and neighbors, will meet on Queen Anne, location TBA. We'll light shabbat candles and continue on with music, prayer, meditation, and words to fortify us for the work ahead. Please RSVP to Kavana and they will send you further details once they are set.

If you can’t get to one of the organized gatherings, join in spirit by letting your light shine in your yard or living room at 9 pm.
