Pentecost Special Offering May 31

May 19, 2020

Pentecost is a major day in the church calendar; it comes 50 days after Easter and marks the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, helping fulfill their mission to “preach the Gospel to all nations.”  For this reason, Pentecost is also called “the birthday of the Church.”  So our gifts remind us that we are all “being church” together and that “church” had a beginning -- at Pentecost.

May 31 thru the end of June, gifts earmarked Pentecost Special Offering will be divided evenly between Strengthen the Church and Plymouth UCC Scholarship Fund.  This offering is one of four special offerings throughout the church year to support national and local ministries within our denomination.

As called by General Synod, 50 percent of our offering to Strengthen the Church stays in the Pacific Northwest Conference UCC, and 50 percent is sent to the national work of strengthening the church universal: through grants towards new church starts, inspiring youth and young adults into leadership, and equipping pastors for ministry in the 21st century.

The remaining 50% will go in the Plymouth UCC Scholarship Fund to enable members and friends in financial hardship take part in opportunities offered by and through Plymouth UCC!

Wear Red Pentecost Sunday!

The liturgical color for Easter season is celebratory White or Gold. When the season of Easter ends on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, white is replaced with red. This color reminds the congregation of fire—the symbol of the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost the Holy Spirit overpowered the barriers of culture and race.
