I've been working with the Pacific Northwest Conference (PNC) of the United Church of Christ on their Giving Tuesday fundraising campaign. You may have seen various nonprofits advertising this "global generosity movement" where folks are encouraged to participate in a world-wide day of charitable giving. The theme for the PNC's campaign was "Give Thanks" so I've spent the past few weeks connecting with people across the conference to share stories of gratitude for this wider church community. It has lifted my heart to see folks celebrate the work of the PNC by giving back on Giving Tuesday.
The Pacific Northwest Conference is an important network of churches, large and small, connected around our shared vision of justice and equality. In some rural areas, the local UCC church might be the only place for miles and miles that welcomes queer folks as beloved children of God, or that is willing to proclaim "Black Lives Matter." Because of the pandemic, many of these small churches have been struggling. Last summer, Plymouth voted to take some money from our endowment and share it with the Conference, to aid churches in need. That gift has become the Solidarity Fund, and it is already at work strengthening our wider community of faith and ensuring these beacons of welcome and justice stay vital and make it through this tough time.
In this season of giving thanks, I am grateful for the vision and commitment of Plymouth, and the hope we are bringing to others as we live out God's love in action. -Kyna Shilling
