Elizabeth Gordon (PhD, JD, MDiv) began regularly attending Plymouth as a member about a year ago. She joined the Council in January, 2018. While new to Plymouth, Elizabeth has known Plymouth people for several years, including Rev. Dr. Kelle Brown, Council Vice-moderator Bing Tso and Janet Gwilym. Through Rev. Craig Rennebohm, Elizabeth became familiar with Plymouth-affiliated projects, such as Plymouth Healing Communities and Mental Health Chaplaincy. She included these organizations in her doctoral research on spirituality and mental health. “It was Pastor Kelle’s preaching, the familiarity with some of the Plymouth congregation and Plymouth’s committed openness to difference that led us to join Plymouth,” says Elizabeth.
As a Council member, Elizabeth brings her perspective as a newer member and her passion for policy, social justice and systems change as a former attorney for disability rights. She is particularly interested in exploring the diverse ways in which Plymouth can express the love of God through interactions with the broader community. Elizabeth currently pursues these topics in her current position as theology and spirituality instructor for Seattle University undergraduates. She introduces her students to the richness and wide embrace of Christianity through classroom discussions with Rev. Dr. Kelle and Rev. Steve Davis. Elizabeth also serves as Council liaison to the Community and Care Board which supports ministries related to hospitality (ushers, greeters, fellowship events), welcoming newcomers and providing pastoral care in the community. Elizabeth’s husband Michael participates on the Community and Care Board.
