Gratitude and Hospitality are words we use around the office at Plymouth a great deal. As we plan activities and dream, as we work towards deadlines, as we solve problems and create new ones. We are grateful for the ways in which the staff and people of Plymouth Church UCC come together to include others through our hospitality and welcome. We help them know they have a place here, we are all included in a great journey of faith and hope!
This last week, as we gathered for our Homecoming Sunday, we made room to include people in worship and celebrate communion together. We welcomed guests and celebrated new interns who will work with us in projects of justice. We did these things not knowing exactly how it would all come together, yet we still did it.
We’ve been inviting the congregation over the last several months to start using SimpleChurch as your church directory, as your resource for personal giving information and as another way to contribute! You will also soon have opportunities to volunteer for ministry opportunities and connect with ministry groups through SimpleChurch.
We are also trying something new, and your first experience at giving your RSVP for our Homecoming lunch was helpful. Here’s why it’s important...
We had 206 people in worship! Phenomenal! We anticipated that with this being our starting Sunday for the program year that many would stay for lunch. Tracking previous year’s attendance, we planned enough food for 150, and 134 stayed for lunch; that’s great! However, 60 people let us know they would come for lunch. We can do better! We donated about 20% of the amount of food we purchased (about $400 value) to feed others at the Union Gospel Mission. If we had planned for food based on our RSVP count, we would have needed a “loaves and fish miracle.” With a variety of responding options, we hope to improve how we communicate opportunities and plan effectively for all we do.
We are grateful for who you are and how you draw others in to be part of something so much bigger than all of us. Thank you for sharing yourself in ways that touch lives and make us a stronger community. Yours in grace and hope, Rev. Steve Davis
