As we consider "What Shall we Bring," it's also Coming Out month. Little did we know when our youngest child was baptized 28 years ago, in this very Sanctuary, that a “coming out” would be in our future.
Trevor told us when he was in fifth grade that he thought he was going to be gay when he grew up. Having been raised in an Open and Affirming church, he had some understanding of what that meant and a sense that he would be accepted.
Later, in the 8th grade, he let his Confirmation Leader, the unflappable Becky Colwell, know that he saw himself as a girl and didn't want to share a room with the boys on their trip to Yakima. This was while they were driving to Yakima!
When they got to the Conference Annual meeting in Yakima, Becky and Lyn Stultz quickly revised their plan and took the whole class to see the UCC documentary “Call me Malcolm,” about a trans man who is a UCC minister. This show of love and acceptance was phenomenal, and I can't imagine where our family would be on our journey without it.
So what do we bring? We bring our deep gratitude and our whole selves, knowing we can expect amazing love and acceptance here at Plymouth. –Tad and Cindy Anderson
