December 11, 2018

Advent is a season of waiting for the Christ Child; December always seems to be the month of looking back at the year. It’s a time for ‘best of’ lists, Facebook memory videos and year-in-review panel interviews on KUOW.

We experienced an amazing 2018 at Plymouth! Some of my highlights include Rev. Kevin Bechtold’s ordination service, marching in the Pride Parade with Plymouth and other local open & affirming churches, experiencing an original song by Lucinda Guthrie (with Calvin on drums), being home sick on a Sunday morning and hearing Kelle’s sermon on Facebook live, helping host a rally and direct action training with the Poor People’s Campaign, singing “Prayer of the Children” with the Chancel Choir and hearing little Luca reading The Velveteen Rabbit during worship. I’m sure you have your own list of favorites from church in 2018 (Perhaps it’s totally different than mine!), and I invite you to take a moment to reflect on the wondrous gift that is Plymouth.

The church calendar has seasons, like the rest of the year — fall is homecoming and the start of a new program year, which takes us to Stewardship. December is Advent, that’s true, and it’s also budget season, where we receive the pledges you’ve turned in, we look at all the great things we hope to accomplish in 2019 and we figure out what’s possible.

When I look at the 2019 budget, two things stand out to me: We are a church with an abundance of resources, and we are also a busy church that likes to do a lot of things! In 2019, we have three areas where we’re growing: Rev. Kevin Bechtold joined our staff this fall as Minister of Youth and Families, we increased our volunteer ministry (to encourage more congregational engagement both inside and outside the church), and we extended more support to the critical work of Plymouth Immigration Ministry Team. With increasing building costs and declining pledges, we seek creative and prayerful solutions to get everything to add up. Please stay after worship this Sunday, December 16, in the Sanctuary for a discussion of our vision for Plymouth’s future, and more specifically, our 2019 budget.

And between now and Sunday, test your Plymouth budget knowledge on this awesome quiz I created! Take a break from your hectic to-do list for this: Plymouth Budget Quiz

P.S. if you haven’t turned in your pledge yet, please do! We need that information to make our budget accurate. -Kyna Shilling, Congregational Council
