Joy. Love. The body of Christ. A Uniting Church of Christ.
Out of duty, I attended the installation of our UCC General Minister and President Dr. John Dorhauer this past Sunday. The Normandy Park Samoan Choir’s beautiful voices shifted me as I took a seat. The Sanctuary was full of smiling, happy people I largely didn’t know. Rev. Brigitta Remole welcomed everyone; conference ministers offered words of challenge. The Rev. Darrell Goodwin, of Liberation UCC, spoke of rebuilding systems to ensure all are really welcome in a Uniting Church of Christ. The Rev. Sue Artt, General Synod Moderator, challenged us to be and work together as we, and the world, need each other. During the offering (collected to fund new initiatives identified by the UCC President) Bellevue First Congregational and Plymouth Choirs sang a moving Gloria, Bluegrass Mass. Plymouth’s Morgan Gwilym-Tso invited John Dorhauer to step forward and accept the call to this office. Bread was broken, wine was poured and the Holy Spirit was with us. Our UCC President led a conga processional line as the Sanctuary filled with voices singing We are marching in the light of God!
In one afternoon, I experienced the body of Christ and saw a glimpse of the kingdom of God. Plymouth is one piece of the body of Christ, and we are on this journey with a lot of other people! Sometimes just showing up, being open and surrounded by those of strong faith will shift your heart.
With much gratitude to Rev. Brigitta Remole for the vision of hosting the installation and her event leadership, and to the entire staff and many congregants who supported this Spirit filled day. –Connie SandstromSubscribe
