Starting Monday, September 11, in Hildebrand Hall, Plymouth hosts weekly rehearsal space for The Path with Art Singers, a group of 30-40 individuals brought together by their shared love of music and challenging life circumstances. Their current location at Benaroya Hall is under renovation. When Path with Art approached Plymouth with their request for practice space, the answer was a resounding “Yes!”
The Path with Art Singers began as an eight-week class in 2014, one of many offered by the Seattle non-profit organization that seeks to help people recover from homelessness and addiction through creative engagement. Participants wanted to continue singing together so The Path with Art Singers was formally launched as a way to foster continuous community.
“The Path with Art Singers have indeed become a community in the strongest sense, and often refer to each other and the group as family,” says Holly Jacobson, Executive Director for Path with Art.
Jacobson also lauded Teaching artist and Music director Rebekka Goldsmith, describing her as ‘a compassionate and dedicated leader who provides encouragement with dignity and well-honed musical skills.’ The group was featured in a moving KCTS video in 2016 that won a national Emmy award. “When we get together, it’s meeting of the souls,” says one regular attendee. “I was abused my whole life and was not able to get out what was in my heart until I found this group. This is the one thing that’s a for-sure thing for me. It saved my life.”
Currently 90 individuals are signed up and about 30 to 40 consistently participate. Since their formation, performances include the annual Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition, Seattle Symphony in 2015 with sound sculptor Trimpin and at an event for Seattle Housing Development Consortium.
In mid-September, Plymouth will also host an Art exhibition in Hildebrand Hall featuring visual artists from Path with Art, on the church-wide theme “Coming Home.” –Janice RandallSubscribe
