“Sometimes the only way out is back through”
Last April, Plymouth Church Youth Forum experienced a life-changing mission trip, retracing actual steps of the American Civil Rights Movement. Upon their return, the 10 high-school aged youth and their leaders compiled their experiences into a book, “Our Faith Journey through the American Civil Rights Movement.” Join us as youth and a wide variety of local musicians lead us on a moving journey toward openness, understanding and a path toward dismantling racism through understanding white supremacy and privilege.
This event premiers “Kyrie,” an exciting, new 20-minute work composed by Stephen Marshall-Ward and Michael Austin Miller. The piece features selected texts from Plymouth Youth Forum's book, “Our Faith Journey through the American Civil Rights Movement,” with significant contributions from local civil rights leaders. Taking us through first steps of understanding, this new work demonstrates how to begin the process toward personally dismantling white privilege, supremacy and racism.
The concert features many talented Greater Seattle-based musicians, including Duo-Organists Wanda Griffiths and Stephen Marshall-Ward with reSound, a Northwest Chamber Ensemble, Dave Beck, cello, Kyle Erickson, trumpet, Ian Alvarez, percussion and interviews with Plymouth Youth Forum participants.
“Let Justice Roll Down – A Multi-Media Musical Journey to Selma and Back” performs at 3 pm, February 11, 2018 in Plymouth Sanctuary; $15 suggested donation at the door benefits the Scholarship Fund for an adult mission trip to Selma planned for July/2018.
Following the concert, all are invited to share a communal dinner in Hildebrand Hall, connect and continue the conversation.
Special thanks to cosponsors: Plymouth Congregational Church, The Youth Forum (A Ministry of Plymouth Church), reSound, a Northwest Chamber Ensemble and the Institute for Social Change through the Arts. –Wanda Griffiths, Director of Music and OrganistSubscribe
